CAPE TOWN’S NEW TABLE BAY MALL SET TO OPEN IN SEPTEMBER 2017

Table Bay Mall, a new Regional Retail Development located on the northern reaches of Sunningdale in Cape Town, is nearing completion and will be opening its doors on 28 September 2017. Situated on the corner of the R27 (West Coast Road) and Berkshire Boulevard, it will be the largest regional mall in the hub of the Big Bay, Bloubergstrand and West Beach areas and is well positioned to offer a unique shopping experience to the fast-growing residential expansion corridor along Cape Town’s West Coast.

With over 65,000m2 of retail space, with the option to expand to 90,000m2, Table Bay Mall will be home to more than 150 shops and restaurants, many of which are flagship stores. Set on one level, with a retail mix of local and international anchor brand tenants such as Woolworths, H&M, Pick n Pay and Checkers, the layout makes for easy shopping navigation as well as exceptional access and visibility. The Mall offers 1,300 outside and 2,000 undercover parking bays easily accessible to the retail level via three main lobbies.

The sophisticated maritime design of Table Bay Mall has been inspired by the curved, flowing lines of the world’s most elegant power yachts; with its design elements bringing a sense of space, natural light and movement into the building. According to Imraan Ho-Yee, Director at Vivid Architects, the Mall’s design also has tremendous pedestrian edge, “The building’s long facade that faces on to the forecourt parking area is an active facade operating as a busy high street, tenanted by lively interesting shop fronts and feature restaurants”.

It has been designed as a place to gather, relax and take in the action. The central entrance is bordered by alfresco-style coffee shops, restaurants and eateries, the ideal place to sit and watch the world go by; and the Mall’s main exhibition space also resides in this space allowing for new interesting events and entertainment options.
Innovative green-building technologies have been incorporated into the design, with water- and power-saving initiatives playing a major part in the long-term sustainability of the site. “With the current drought and future water issues facing the Western Cape, we have been extremely conscious of water and energy consumption during construction and we have implemented a number of measures to ensure that Table Bay Mall will remain sustainable going forward”, says Janine Coleske, Centre Manager at Table Bay Mall.

“Rain water harvested from the roof will be directed into two water harvesting ponds that have been created to store water for irrigation and ablutions use. Dry and indigenous planting, as well as rock gardens, have been used around the mall and two boreholes provide additional water if required. Water-saving measures inside the mall include water-saving sensor taps and single flush only toilets in all the restrooms. From an energy-saving perspective, we’ve installed mainly LED lighting throughout and used skylights and glass roof panels to daylight harvesting.”

Construction began towards the end of 2015 and has progressed well, with employment for close to 5,000 people being created over this period. Once operational, Table Bay Mall is expected to create approximately 8,000 new jobs in the area, which includes tenant and service provider positions.
“Fitness enthusiasts will be elated with the brand new Virgin Active Gym that is located next to the Mall, where they can work out or have a swim whilst enjoying the amazing views of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. In addition, we have an indoor trampoline park, 23 Jump Street, located in the Mall,” says Karla Linder, Marketing Manager at Table Bay Mall.
“We are extremely excited about the opening of Table Bay Mall and we cannot wait for our shoppers to experience the best in retail shopping here in Cape Town.”
